You cannot argue with the ballot box (you shouldn’t, even if you try!). There will be many people deeply upset by the results and many others quite delighted. Democracy involves listening to the people, even if what they have to say is complicated.
I know that it is now my task to try and provide a calming influence. The work of Government must go on. The task of forging a new relationship with Europe has to begin. There will be a change of Prime Minister before the year is out. There will be new arrangements to be made, new directions to be found. But I am confident in the spirit of the people who live here in Somerset. I also have an abiding belief in our local industries. I think we can overcome future difficulties together. Over the coming weeks I am making myself available to discuss all the issues.
